List of questions

The Swiss foundation landscape is highly diverse. It ranges from large, professionally organised foundations with extensive structures and processes managed by full-time employees, to smaller, very lean foundations managed by volunteer foundation board members. The following list of questions can provide the latter in particular with valuable guidance on how to align their foundation’s structures, processes and finances for the future.

Organisation of the foundation board

  • Are there any regulations (organisational regulations, remuneration regulations)? When were these last revised?
  • Is the necessary expertise in place for fulfilling the foundation’s purpose?
  • Is there a strategy for the foundation, and how old is it?
  • Is the process for making donation decisions appropriate?
  • Are there internal processes governing the responsibilities of foundation board members and third parties (such as banks)? Is adequate attention paid to the internal control system (ICS) and to minimising liability risks?

Investment strategy

  • Do you have an investment strategy or investment regulations in place, and are they up to date?
  • Do you carry out liquidity planning? To what extent are cash flows considered in the investment strategy?
  • Are the investments consistent with the foundation’s purpose and therefore compliant with that purpose?

Costs

  • How high are the annual administration costs (accounting, auditing, supervision, staff) and are they commensurate with the size of the foundation’s assets?
  • What are the investment costs? Are there hidden costs (e.g. FX or brokerage fees)?
